Other SURF Community Regeneration Project Areas are: Youth Employability, Creative Regeneration, Community-led Regeneration, and Scotland’s Most Improved Place.
SURF (Scotland’s Regeneration Forum) and the Scottish Government have teamed up again to deliver the ‘20th Anniversary’ SURF Awards for Best Practice in Community Regeneration for 2018. These are presented each year to projects that are judged by a panel of independent regeneration experts to be performing outstanding regeneration work in some of Scotland’s most disadvantaged communities.
The independent panel of judges for the 2018 SURF Awards comprises four teams of four people in the respective award categories. Each category team jointly agrees a shortlist of three projects to visit before making a final recommendation on the winning projects.
The Judges’ Visit
The purpose of the visit will be to gather a better understanding of the project and its context by:
- Meeting some of the people involved in the management and delivery of the project, as well as some of those benefiting from the work of the project.
- Learning more about how the project operates through discussion with those involved.
- Seeing something of the context the project is operating in and what impact it has had.
Generally, the focus will be on what is being delivered now rather than the history of the project’s development. As far as is possible, the judges will be involved in an active dialogue, which will help them more fully understand the reality of the project, as opposed to passively listening to a series of presentations.
The number of people participating from the project will be kept to a level that enables a sufficiently focused discussion in the limited time available.
The visiting judges will use the originally specified criteria to score the project after the visit. They will then make their recommendations to the full judging panel.
The Decision
The awards process concludes with a celebratory evening event on Thursday 6 December 2018 at The Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow, at which Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Local Government, Aileen Campbell MSP will reveal the 2018 SURF category winners.
